First of all, do NOT swim with a pad on. and second you should just keep trying to use tampons, dont wait until the day of your competition to try again, it really isnt hard. i would suggest using tampons with a plastic applicator because it is easier to insert. also depending on your flow, you should maybe try using lites? (the smallest sized tampon) becasue that might be easiest for the first time. there is also directions on the box. when the tampon is in, you shouldnt feel it at all.. if it hurts or you feel it, take it out and try again, that simply means that you didnt push it in far enough for it to go past the muscle. it really isnt hard at all, just keep trying. oh and stay relaxed when you are inserting it. it is harder to insert it when you are tensed up. also try different positions to find which is easiest for you, like sitting on the toilet, standing over toilet, or putting one leg up on toilet. I hope i helped and good luck! (:

Don't worry about it! Tampons will be your best friend once you figure out how to use them properly.
It usually doesn't hurt inserting a tampon unless you're doing it wrong. In each box of tampons, there will be a little folded paper with instructions of how to insert a tampon properly. Read this little manual completely before you try it yourself - it will tell you everything you need. The main thing you need to remember is relax your vaginal muscles. If you aren't relaxed, you're going to be forcing the tampon, and that makes it more uncomfortable.
For now, read this article on inserting a tampon for the first time. http://www.ehow.com/how_2225870_insert-tampon-firs... this will help you a lot.

If you really dont know how to use one, I've used a pad while swimming and nothing happened, although it is uncomfortable. Wear a pad and have shorts on, if tampons are too much work for you.
