Does religion have any place whatsoever in a publicly funded school?

There's a great outcry against giving out Gideon bibles in classrooms.

I say "Hooray" as I don't believe that religion belongs in a secular school system.

I also say that if people are so worried about their children receiving religious education then they should see to it that they get to church or temple or whatever and they attend a separate sabbath school.

Update:

I figure kids might stop bringing guns to school and stuff if they have families that give them a sense of inclusion and not the nasty brutal rootless upbringings that they seem subject to.

Only in an elective, World Religions course. I think it's important for children to understand the religions of the world as they effect all of our lives and culture as well as play a massive part in our history, but not to be indoctrinated with any one religion.

There are thousands of religions on this planet. Billions of people have followed religions for thousands of years. If evolution can be taught is private high schools, why can't world religions be at least an elective in public high schools?

I think religion should be mentioned. There are a lot of religious folk out there so it would be a flaw in the education system to not tell kids a little bit about them. All major religions should be mentioned. The key thing is that they should be explained as belief, not fact.

Not taught as the truth, but studied as a myth.

It can be part of social studies (learning about different cultures) and comparative religions, but I don't see it anywhere else. University courses not withstanding.
