Hijabs are disrespectful?
First things first - this is a discussion of head coverings, NOT face veils. That is a whole separate issue, one that I don't care to get into, as it doesn't affect me. Now to the question...
I have repeatedly heard it said on Y!A, from one poster in particular, that it is rude/disrespectful to wear hijab in western countries. I would like to know why exactly. She never states a reason, and I cannot fathom why anyone would think this way. Nuns wear head coverings, as do the Plain Christians (Amish, Mennonites, Quakers), Sikhs, and Jews. I have yet to hear anyone say that these are disrespectful, so I don't see how a hijab is.
Before anyone thinks I am a Muslim apologist, no, I am not. I am Christian. I am just tired of hearing this response without any reasoning for it. I veil by choice (veil as in covering the hair, not the face), independent of any church decree, and I know many other Christian women who also veil by choice. Be it a bandanna, snood, kapp, turban, tichel, or hijab, I fail to see how wearing a head covering is anti-American. If anything, it is very American, because this country is all about religious freedom, at least in theory. I come from a long line of Americans, and I served my country in the United States Marine Corps. I think I should be the judge of what is "disrespectful" to our country. None of my military friends have a problem with it, so why should anyone else? And for the record, I know a few other veterans that veil.
Sorry about the rant, but I really would like an answer from the offending party, or anyone else of a like mindset.
@Rock Climber - Who says I'm hiding? Are you hiding when you wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants? If I wanted to hide, I would never leave home. If anything, I do the opposite, because I work in the retail industry specifically because I like working with people.
@Shelly - I have nothing against niqab. A lot of ignorant people don't know the difference between niqab and hijab, so I felt the need to specify that it was not a discussion about the niqab. There are a lot of people that don't take issue with head coverings, but do take issue with face veils, because they see them as a security threat. I didn't want the discussion to become about how head coverings (by which they mean face veils) are a security issue, because they are not.

no it's not... face covering is another matter....
if I can't enter a bank in a ski mask why should someone be allowed to enter wearing a religious garb that creates the exact same security issue...

The answer is IGNORANCE and prejudices
First of all there's nothing wrong with face veils either you were acting as if you let someone get the idea you were talking about the Nijab and Hijab that it would make a difference. The purpose of covering in the first place is out of modesty and respect. That is what the teachings tell them to do just like if you are a orthodox jewish you would grow a beard and dress a certain way. Saying that religious wear is disrespectful is like saying practising your religion to please your God is wrong which would also make the person a hyprocrite. But anyways Face veils are just an extent of modesty their teachings say to cover themselves it doesnt say how much or how little but someone who decides to so the full veil does it again because they believe its the most they can do to respect their god and religion. They also do it to hide their beauty and so that you will not judge them on their hair, eyes, boobs, bum, their skin w.e
Source(s): I researched Muslim religion very deeply and worked with them. ALSO 9/11 has proof now it was a government conspiracy witnesses were killed after giving information and there were people dying and dead before the plane even hit the buildings. And if a christian were to crash the plan into the buildings no one would be like christian terrorist get of here - 9 years ago
If someone states an opinion, and neglects or refuses to provide any rationale supporting it, you shouldn't let it bother you.
One of my friends informed me that, in the days after the planes hit the towers, several of the Muslim girls at St. Joan Antida high school (run by Catholics) were being harassed by bullies. So the Catholic girls began wearing the hijab, too, as an indication that a piece of cloth does not always indicate an approval of murderous acts.
After the bullying stopped, the Catholics went back to whatever else they had been wearing.

I have no problem with it at all.
My ideology on life is let life live, basically if a Muslim what's to cover her face/hair then let her it isn't causing any offence to me at all. I don't understand why Muslims are brandished with this treatment of being told that there anti-west for covering themselves as other religions use a form of covering and nothing is ever said. I'm British and I hear some ignorant people stating that Muslims shouldn't cover themselves and I always say why shouldn't they? After all it's a free country your allowed to wear your skinny jeans then they can wear they hijab honestly who cares as long as there obeying the law, working, supporting the state and intergrating then let them do what they want.
Hope this helped x
