Listening to him right now. I had an opportunity to see him a couple of years ago, but I was broke. I would have taken out a loan if I knew that was my last chance.
Favorite songs by The Band:
"The Weight"
"Life is a Carnival"
"Across the Great Divide"
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"
"W.S. Walcott Medicine Show"
Solo:
"Watermelon Time in Georgia"
"Wide River to Cross"
"Blue House of Broken Hearts"
Tennessee Jed
"Even a Fool Would Let Go"

It'd be easier to name Band songs I don't rate as favorites. Richard was probably the best singer and Rick had that heart-tugging timbre to his voice but Levon was always my favorite vocalist of the three. He had a quality that somehow conveyed joyous abandon and an American sensibility regardless of the lyrics. As for his solo stuff, most of it was at least good or better, going all the way back to his first solo release-Levon Helms and The RCO All-Stars. The whole Dirt Farmer album is great. I've posted this already on two questions about Levon in the last few days, but I've been kind of stuck on it and I think it's worth posting a third time so that word gets out to those who aren't familiar with it-it's particularly poignant now-

Levon's song choices the last few years seem to bear out that mortality was never far from his mind after the first cancer bout. Here's a few more that I've been listening to since first hearing his time was running out

I can imagine them playing this song at Levon's funeral...
One more shot just for old times
One last stand
One more hit ought to do it
Then quit while we can
Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, & Emmylou Harris - "Jesse James, One More Shot"
