Pleco with possible ich/ick ?
I got my bristlenose pleco today, and i foolishly skipped quarantine. This was a bad idea. He looks as though he has dry skin (lol not that he has skin but thats what it looks like) and it looks like someone crushed up salt and sprinkled it on his fins.
I'm including a picture of this pleco so you can get a general idea of what his fins look like (keep in mind this is not mine as my camera sucks)

He has been sucking the algae right off the sides and ornaments in the tank and is fairly active but I don't feel comfortable with the way he looks.
My temperature has been maintained at 78 degrees and while admiring (and fearing) my new addition, I turned it up 2 degrees. Keep in mind this is a 55 gallon tank so its going to take a while to reach 80.
I don't want to use any medications as im holding albino cory catfish in this tank at the moment and i don't want to harm them in any way. I would prefer to just rid this the non- chemical way with a temperature increase.
At what temperature should i keep the tank at, and for how long?
Any advice is appreciated, and this is the first and last time i don't quarantine.
I'm aware they can't only survive on algae he has wafers, and I am prepared to feed him veggies as well thank you :)
& Also I haven't heard of many cases of ich killing fish, I was just wondering how long to keep my temperature high to kill it.
I know its a parasite so it becomes free swimming and when it multiplies goes to other fish but at higher temperatures for a certain amount of time they die off completely. So cleaning the whole tank out isn't really necessary *thankfully*

Plecos cannot survive on algae alone. Pop in a sinking wafer or a piece of blanched green veggie.
To me this doesn't look like ich, the distribution is all wrong for a pleco. I could be wrong in which case a day or two to sweat it out would help.

if it's not ich, turnin the temp up won't do anything. a picture would definitely help. For now, I would just monitor the fish and see if the white spots become more prominent. If it is ich for sure, then you can turn the temp up to 87-89 Fahrenheit. What that does is doesn't kill the ich, but it speeds up the life cycle of the ich. That way, when the ich falls off the fish and explodes in the gravel, it wil shorten the life cycle window that the ich can infect a host fish. If it can't find a host, then the ich will die.

Get it up to 82 degrees but the best bet is to remove the fish from your tank before the other fish catch ick then it become a hassle to clean everything out and have your current fish die.
