Mind shutting down in response to stress?

I need to try not to make this too long, so here I go; whenever I get stressed or overwhelmed and can't seem to get away from it, I start to get really calm, stare blankly into space, not move at all unless I have some sort of outside incentive (name called, touched, itchy) and any reactions are very slow (or at least seem to be), and often, at its worse, I'm unresponsive for the most part. It's not entirely involuntary, though I wouldn't call it voluntary. I can't get out of it unless I'm alone for 5-10 minutes and have time to get back to normal; it's sort of scary, but at the same time it's not an unpleasant experience. I'm fully conscious during these episodes and they vary in intensity. I'm fairly aware of what's going on around me, though everything seems hazy and ethereal; it's like I'm separated from it. It can last anywhere from 10 minutes to over two hours. The stressful situations usually aren't too extreme, though I know I'm a fairly anxious person. I'm a 16 year old male. If you have any idea what could be going on, please give an opinion; thanks.

Your symptoms reflect my living history. I used to get lost in the suburb I lived in for 10 years! When visiting a brain surgeon he did an electrograph and discovered I was highly stressed, did not sleep well and was depressed. Since taking medication I am my old self again. I am not pro pill taking, but sleeping tablets (over the counter) really helps your brain to switch off and give you a good night's sleep. You need this in order to wake up refreshed and ready to go through the next day.

Happens to me too. It's not stress it's called depression. You should also not really feel that you are yourself. Don't worry just try to be happy even though it's kind of hard at this stage and think about positive things. Play some multiplayer games with Friends or people, and think positively. When your body tells you not to do anything and stare into space. Force it and I do mean force it to stand up and do some situpus. You will slowly start to see that you can control yourself Better and that you will start to get rid of those blank moments.
