Why Do We Call the Son of God by the Name Jesus?

Would you be surprise to learn that the letter "J" nor its sound can be found in the Greek, Latin or Hebrew languages? Yet, many followers of the Lord call Him by a name not His. Partly because of the Jewish Masoretic priests who thought that the name of the living God was too Holy for people to say and changed the "a" vowel to "e."

Update:

LOL Auntie pantie! There is the truth and then there is man's way. It is a KNOWN fact that the Greeks called Him; "Iesous" and that the Latin language called Him; "Iesous" and in Hebrew His name was "Yahshua." [In the 1611 version of the King James Version of the Bible there was no “J” letter in this Bible for because it did not exist. James was spelled Iames. Jesus was spelled Iesous.] Just because the world says one thing, does not make it correct -- maybe that's why the Lord Yahushua/Yahshua said; "For many are called, but few are chosen" (Matthew 22:14 KJV). Obviously you didn't check out the website - but thanks for your input:-D

Update 2:

Ah, but does it make a difference in what we call Him? If there is no other name under Heaven that we can call on to be saved . . . shouldn't we KNOW that name? Another real good source of information is this website http://www.eliyah.com/hr-pr.html - :)

Update 3:

Vortex, what makes you so sure that He is "not offended?"

Update 4:

Aurorah, how can the name "Jesus" mean, "God is salvation" when it does not have the “Yah” part of the Father’s name in the translation?

You are correct he was never called or heard the name Jesus in his lifetime. It is a translation that is commonly used so I am sure he is not offended as he knows who a person is praying to. The name of God is a Hebrew Tetragram YHWH that no one knows the exact way to pronounce so Yahweh is used. That may be wrong but it is also in common usage so it is the best we can do.

The name Jesus was revealed to Joseph in a dream.

Matt 1: 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Of course, our pronunciation is a westernization of the Aramaic.

    Cheers,

    Bruce

  • almost none of the "names" cited in The Bible's English translations are the exact names of the individuals referred to..... due in great part to the limitations of English, relative to the "original" languages....... so ?...... no big deal....... The Bible is an instruction applicable only to those of The True Church commissioned by God and to those honestly seeking to become a part of The True Church...... the names will be different in every language into which The Word of God is translated..... so?..... Don't worry about it

It means "God is salvation" and is therefore perfectly appropriate

    Hebrew - Yehushua

    English - Joshua/Jesus

Note the J in English - and not Hebrew

    The Greek is Iesous

Because we are taught from the bible, that what it says is true. I have alot of issues with alot of the bible, but questioniing a name is not on of them. Good question, but really, let's not worry about names, let's find, or try to find answers to other questions.

I think I would really have to sit down and think pretty hard for a few minutes to come up with a subject that deserves less attention and interest.

If the letter 'j' cannot be found in the Greek, Latin or Hebrew languages, then I guess we better re-write the entire Bible and remove all the 'j's' then??

    .

It's like every other name in the Bible, it was Anglicized in the KJV. (Or before.)

Which is fine. We all know who it refers to.
