I got told off because my dog peed?
Just a few minutes ago I took my 8 month old Malamute out for a piss, I live in an apartment building, and my malamute had just drank a ton of water and couldn't hold it in. She peed right in front of the building, in a patch of thick weeds. A neighbour walked by and asked me if I'm going to pick it up. I looked at her, confused, and said she is just peeing, not pooping. She told me next time I better take her farther away because kids play here. Really? Kids play in that patch of thick weeds? Anyways, I told her she couldn't hold it in, the lady just walked away after that without saying anything.
I realize that I should have taken her somewhere else, but she really needed to go, and I didn't think it would be a problem if she peed. I live right next to an elementary school, and the kids always leave trash around our building, and the kids that live in our building always kick balls around right in front, and we have to duck to avoid getting hit in the face with the ball. The kids are always screaming and making noise too, which is annoying. The worst is summer evenings, the kids stay out till 9, 10 at night playing and screaming, when I just want to get some rest, and no one says anything.
Am I being rude because my dog couldn't hold it in and just peed there? What am I supposed to do, drag her away when she squats?
I'm probably going to be known now as 'the ***** who let her dog pee where the precious children play', since I live in a small town, and my building is small, and people like to gossip here.
I just wanted to say I respect everybody's answers, you all made some very good points. cleggsmi1, my town has 'cleaners' that clean up the garbage in the whole town every week. Everyday they clean up a different part of town, my area is cleaned once a week, but still there is quite a bit of garbage that accumulates throughout the week and it looks gross.
youngatheart, you made a good point, its all about community etiquette. Next time I'll just keep her on a shorter leash, we have an empty lot down the road where I usually take her, today was just an accident.
CJK, funny that you mention rain, its been raining here non stop for 3 weeks! It'll be washed away.
Cookie, you make a good point, when my Malamute grows bigger, I'm sure that I will be encounter more of these types of things in the future.
And thanks for the other humorous answers, you guys made me laugh! :)
The reason I mentioned the kids that make too much noise and litter is because it just pisses me off that people don't say anything about those brats, but have the nerve to tell me that my dog can't pee there just once.

Just ignore the silly old bat. Your puppy really needed to go pee, I dont think it should be an issue considering your pup is of course a puppy. What would she prefer? a small puppy piddle or mass pond when the dog is an adult?Besides. I bet people who walk their dogs past that bush allow them to pee on it all the time, especially a male who wants to cock his leg so really she cant tell you off that much about it at all as she doesnt own that place.

The way things are now, just walkinng a dog past someone's door makes them think they have a right to abuse you verbally. "Hope your damn dog isn't going to pee on my grass!?"
It seems that no matter how conscientious you are you still get called out by precious loonies; usually they can be ignored like bad weather which will pass. But if they are particularly bumptious I will engage them in 're-educative conversation'. The "Oh, I'm SOOOOOOOOO sorry! Whatever can i do to put it right for you?" response is useful and of course they never get the irony.
Someone suggested coming back and putting some Lime powder down? Yes it soaks up and detoxifies the pee, but it can also burn children's hands and dog's paws. You could be acused of chemical poisoning by Health & Safety jobsworths.

get used to it. People get pissed just by walking a dog in front of their house without it doing anything.

She is definetly just being a miserable old woman. If she happens to do it again and says something about the kids playing there I'd tell her "yeah I know they play here, I saw a few of them spitting here and everywhere else too". It's going to be absorbed into the ground or washed away by rain.

Take a bucket, pot, of water down there and pour it on the spot where she peed so no one can say you are not a responsible dog owner. Secondly, if it happens again, and it probably will, when someone confronts you politely explain that you don't watch them where they pee and your pooch would greatly appreciate it i you didn't watch her. Don't make other excuses for what you were caught doing. By now you should realize if you want something done with the garbage the school kids are throwing around you need to go to the school and ask to speak to the principal and school custodian and tell them that the children are trashing your neighborhood and you would appreciate it if they could speak to the children in regards to this.
You have two separate issues in your question. Make sure you address your problems individually.

In a word, yes. Realize that you live among people who do not have dogs and have no understanding of dogs. When walking your dog to relieve herself, she should be on a leash and taught to wait until you are in an area where she can relieve herself. You let her pee right in front of the building. Whether it was weeds or flowers doesn't matter, since urine has a smell and if she does it there, then any stray dog is going to mark its territory there. Soon, every time you walk out of the building you will smell dog urine. When I lived in a resort area, my dog learned to not pee at every bush on a walk because it was expensive landscaping kept up by the resorts. He was taken to an empty lot and I let him potty there. Or out on the back of the island where it was open ground with no development.
Next time your dog has to pee that badly that she has to go right outside the door, take some powdered limestone with you and sprinkle it over the urine to absorb the smell and keep other dogs from peeing there. It is a simple matter of community etiquette. And it will not give dog owners a bad name among your neighbors.

There is nothing wrong with letting your dog pee there, you should be allowed too. I don't think anyone wants to play in weeds? but is different if your dog did a ****. I don't think pee will do any harm to there shoes.
