would there be any advantage to running a hybrid car that uses more #'s of smaller engines .?

is there any advantage to using many smaller engines instead of one engine for the whole car or 4 one for each wheel?

    Well it depends on what is trying to be achieved. With multiple of engines you could run them at different rates but there would be much reason for that. and when you mention hybrid you are talking about a gasoline engine combined with motors for propulsion. Now with the electric motors driving the vehicle there is still much debate over single motor or multiples.

    an engine at each wheel is logistical near impossible unless they're electric engines that can be precisely controlled by central computer brain.

    4 engines linked at the crank shaft would work, in fact, it's such a good idea that it's been done.

    GM made some engines in the 70s like that but they had reliability issues. There are some engines like that today that have ostensibly solved the reliability issues, time will tell.
