Hello. If you are seeking a detailed answer to your question, keep reading. There are a couple of things you need to increase your readership and have people not just click away. You want them there long enough for them want to be contacted by you at a later date. I'm not sure if you are using a Blogger or WordPress platform but either way you'll need content to get yourself noticed. Also, if a visitor to your blog has no "call to action" they will be gone in a matter of seconds. Most all professional blog platforms (hint...Google loves WordPress) gives you the opportunity to incorporate an auto-responder. What's that? It's a program that, once set up, will compile the list of people that visit your blog. You ever see those websites that say "FREE Report on the 5 most controversial opinions that are argued about on the internet" Simply include your name and primary e-mail address below." Once you enter your name and e-mail address and hit "submit", that data goes into an auto-responder. You may even be send you another web site asking you to check your e-mail address to confirm that it is truly you requesting this report. That message is automatically sent from an auto-responder.
Once someone clicks submit they immediately get an e-mail message pre-programmed by you to ensure that it was them who signed up for your report. Once they click that link, they can be taken to a separate web page where they can download the report or sent to your blog where they can download the report. At that point you can load up messages to be sent out to these e-mail addresses periodically or you can choose broadcast that you have posted something new to your blog, and include the new blog post link inside this message. There are many auto-responders out there but what I've used since 1998 is AWeber. It's pretty easy to use and they have added video tutorials to making the set up even easier. I'll see if I can include the link that starts you up with a $1 first months trial and $19 per month after that. It's an invaluable tool.
Now that you've taken your time to set up your auto-responder, it's time to drive traffic to your blog. To do this, keep in mind that Google looks for and penalizes for duplicate content. It's not like the times when you could totally copy an article and paste it to your blog and call it your own. Each of your posts should have a specific keyword phrase in mind to attract the targeted readers who will be interested in your blog. So each 300 word post should include the long-tailed keyword phrase 3 times and be sure to "bold" it to make it easier for search engines to pick it up and rank it. You may want to do a little keyword research on the Google Keyword Tool to change the keywords and titles you choose to use to see if it is getting any traffic or adjust those titles and keywords to a series of words that are searched heavily. One strategy is to look up and attempt to dominate a high traffic series of words to get you high ranking on page one of Google that can bring huge traffic. For example, our website has two listings ranked on page one number 1, 2, & 3 (it fluctuates) for the term SEO DC, because we use that long-tailed keyword phrase often at the beginning of most our post titles and 1 time for every 100 words in each post without it looking or sounding weird or awkward. Go ahead. Look it up.
Ok, back to content, and a lot of it. The tool we use is SEO Link Vine. Again, I'll see if I can provide a link to this service. Here you can create unique content and do something call spin it. It will spin your article and pop out your article in a different version, using different words. You then can offer that to the network (include your blogs address inside) to allow others to use those new articles on their blogs to increase their content. They do the same and you are able to select articles for your blog that you can edit to increase the volume of content to your blog. That's how to best get the amount of content up, which will drive traffic to your blog and get the attention of the search engines like Google.
Hope this helps.
Like I said, get Google ranking and the rest will follow. Google loves unique new content. But unless you have time to sit for hours on end thinking up new content all the time, this is a great way to go. Good luck.

Blog comments and forum post signatures on relevant sites are some of the easier places to insert links to your site that may bring some direct traffic and raise the site's search ranking, optimizing for search engines seems to still be the biggest way to get free traffic after investing a considerable amount of time.
