Water is a polar molecule, and is good at dissolving polar compounds (e.g. ionic compounds). Carbon Tet is a nonpolar molecule and is good at dissolving nonpolar compounds (e.g. most organic compounds). So, this question is asking you to determine the relative polarity of each compound and match like with like.

    A) This is nonpolar compound; you can tell because Kr is on the right side of the periodic table, and so is F. The closer on the table they are, the less polar the bond. Therefore, you'd use a nonpolar solvent like Carbon Tet to dissolve this compound.

    E) This is an ionic compound. You can tell because Mg and F are on opposite sides of the periodic table. Ionic bonds are very polar, so you'd want to use water to dissolve this compound.

Can you figure out the rest?
