Why didn't God accurately describe the Moon to the writers of Genesis?

You'd think an all knowing being who created the Moon would know it isn't a source of light!

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesi...

Update:

A flashlight is a source of light, a mirror is not, reflector argument is invalid.

Update 2:

From dictionary.com: an illuminating agent or source, as the sun, a lamp, or a beacon.

The moon, is a reflector, not a source.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/reflector?s...

Yes, the moon may be the source of some insignificant radiation. Whoop-de-do, its meaningless in this context.

The writers of the Genesis creation story didn't of course have the knowledge we have today, and wouldn't have known that the sun is a star, or that moonlight is reflected light from the sun. They would also have thought that daylight was something spiritual, not physical as we now know it is nor that it travels, and would not have thought of the sun as being its source (the moon is referred to as a "light" in verse 16). The functions of the sun and moon may have been considered as being to separate the light from the darkness - day and night - and darkness would not have been thought of as merely the absence of light.

The Moon **is** a source of light for the Earth. That is indisputable - scientifically and linguistically indisputable.

The Moon is not a generator of light, of course - but, then, Genesis does not claim that it is.

(Genesis 1:16) "And God proceeded to make the two great luminaries, the greater luminary for dominating the day and the lesser luminary for dominating the night, and also the stars."

Abraham's god was amazingly inaccurate at times, in fact Yaweh was flat out wrong on many occasions. The Bible, King James is the most popular, is a compendium of separate books that a group of scholars in London thought should be in the Bible. Several books were omitted, ie. Mary Magdalene, Peter, Judas. It is mostly Jewish writers, and not as many as the writers would have you believe.

Before electricity, surgeons at night used mirrors to enhance the brightness of the candles or oil lamps they were using. The mirrors in effect "lighted" the room.

  • Why do you guys tell us to pay attention to science when you yourselves don't know hardly anything about it yourselves? Everything gives off light, including the moon. Yes, the moon does reflect light from the sun, but it also generates light as well.

    i disagree with you.

if you live in the country, you would appreciate moonlight esp. when there are no street lights.

if you claim that the moon isn't a source of light,
