Movie theater experience question for you?
Two parts
1. what is the difference(s) between IMAX and 3d other than screen size
2. which is the better experience?
Its tougher for me to get to the imax but would be willing to try if its a big difference to see Avengers

It's all personal preference, but most people can't tell the difference.
From my experience I'd say that IMAX has the best 3D effects, but is also the most strenuous on my eyes, especially since I wear contact lenses :p. The difference between the IMAX, Dolby 3D, and RealD experience isn't big enough (unless you're some sort of extreme movie connoisseur lol) to the point that It's worth the longer drive for you.
Besides, 2D or 3D, Avengers is gonna rock :D

Well that is kind of hard to answer because there are mainly 2 types of imax 3d systems. Depends on the imax theater you go to as to what system they have. Most theaters constructed as an Imax theater use the 70mm dual strip projectors. These are usually screens of several stories tall.
Imax theaters constructed in multiplexes like at a mall where one of several screening rooms is an imax screen use digital projection just like other 3d screens.
Other difference is many Imax theaters use linear polarization, while some use circular as most other 3d screens use. In the 1950's 3d movies used linear because they thought it looked better than circular. Today we are told circular looks better. Who knows?
So really you just have to call them. Because it just depends on the projection system Imax has installed at that theater.
