Anybody know the name of this plant?

I was told of a plant that's seed, when placed in soil, visibly unfurls a "root" that bores down into the soil. They couldn't remember the name but said it might start with "f" or "ph". Any suggestions?

Thanks.

You are thinking about a Filaree Flower: http://wildamerica.com/videos/transcripts/s71.html

Another is Mountain Mahogany : http://www.genedodd.com/Gallery/gallery2/main.php?...

These plants have a springy helix "tail" that screws the plant into the ground.
