What is the best pre med course before proceeding to being a doctor?

Hi Im a 17 year old confused girl who happens to be attending medical school next month. I love helping, taking care and nursing people. So I decided to go somewhere in the medical field for university. I planned to take nursing but now having second thoughts after hearing that the shortage for nurses is over.

Should I still take nursing as a pre-med course even if the shortage for nursing is over? What other pre med course do u suggest me taking? Some suggest BS biology, med tech or BS human biology as they say its a fast route to medicine. Please give me advices for it helps me broaden the range of my choices. I really want to be a doctor but I don't know where to start from choosing the right pre med course.

I'm also scared for employment.

There are a lot of pre-med courses you can choose from. Here are my thoughts on some of them.

Nursing - I do not agree with one of the answers. Nursing IS a pre-med course. It can get you into medicine. Furthermore, there is no shortage for nurses. But there will always be a NEED for nurses. If you want to take up nursing, take it. Don't be bothered by the so-called "too many nurses."

Med Tech - One of the best choices for pre-med. At least if you ask me. Med Tech in itself is a very good course. Finishing Med Tech will land you good jobs even if you suddenly decide not to proceed to Medicine. If you do decide to proceed to medicine, Med Tech will help you through the first few years a lot. Most, if not all, lessons in Med Tech are being taken up, and used in Medicine.

BS Biology - Works as a pre-med course. It's good for added knowledge. But other than that, I don't think there are much opportunities for a BS Biology graduate. I think it's only good to take this if you are really sure you will proceed to Medicine.

Human Biology - Same as Bio. I think it's more specific for the humans, though. So I think if you have to choose between Bio and Human Bio, I'd pick Human Bio. Helps more in medicine, especially since it is focused on the human life.

BS Psychology - Works well if you plan to proceed to medicine and specialize in Psychiatry. It'll land you jobs, too. Pays are usually good. But if you want great pay with this degree, you'll need luck!

BS Pharmacy - Really good pre-med course. It allows you to have your own Pharmacy, as well as knowing a great deal on the medicines well ahead before you take on proper medicine. The pharmacy will be a good source of income, if and when you retire. :)

Physical Therapy - I don't really know much about the employment opportunities for this course. But I do know three people who are taking this course up. One of them is thinking of proceeding to medicine.

Well, those are the more common choices. Personally, if I wanted to become a doctor, I'd choose between MedTech and Pharmacy. They seem like the most sensible choices. However, Psychology also interests me. Then again, that's your choice. Good luck!

Nurses are not on the shortage.

Official Report: Government economists expect job growth for RNs to be much faster than the average for all careers through 2018. In fact, registered nursing is predicted to be the career with the largest job growth of all. (Source:College Board)

If you have a passion for nursing, go for it! Nursing will never be on the shortage. The world is in constant need for nurses. After all, do people ever stop being sick? Until we do, we will always need nurses...so don't give up your dream!

If you want to be a doctor, you can major in anything you want for your undergraduate studies. Medical schools don't care about your undergraduate major as long as you do well on your MCAT and retain a good GPA. Statistically, 58% of med students actually had non-science majors. :D

However students majoring in biochemistry had the highest acceptance rate to Med school.

    Good luck!

Don't let the fear of unemployment as a doctor scare you! States ( especially) like Mississippi will even pay you to attend medical school. Any branch of the Military will cover ALL of your expenses in med school AND a stipend! (+ $20,000 toward tuition)(Up to $2,600 monthly stipend) Plus a $20,000 sign on bonus. And you will definitely have a job in the end, I promise!

Take ALL of the colleges recommended pre-med classes (talk to your adviser A LOT). Honestly, there are no classes that can prepare you for medical school. Watch (on youtube) "Doctors' Diaries" by NOVA. (2 part series)

Medical school runs at an incredible rate. And you only have 2 years of classroom based learning. (Not as bad as it's hyped up to be.) If you genuinely love people, nothing should stop you from following your dreams. Don't enter the field of medicine if you are ONLY focused on the money though (you'll be miserable).

YOU CAN MAJOR IN BASICALLY ANYTHING, AS LONG AS YOU TAKE THE REQUIRED PRE-REQ.'S!

Hey there :) So some great pre-med courses you could take are Biomed, Health Sciences, Biology, General Sciences, and literally, any science program you feel you could enjoy. As far as I know, compared to these degrees, nursing might make it a bit more difficult to get into medschool but I'm not sure. The MCATs really only require you to know your first two years of courses like: chem, bio, calculus, algebra. Look into the MCATs and what you should study for those. https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/mcat/prepar...

If you approach the military and ask them to pay for your medschool, they will pay for everything if you give them a few years of service as a doctor afterwards, and dont worry about employment as a doctor, every country in the world needs them. :)

    Best of luck

Don't become a nurse. A nursing degree will not get you into med school.Take a science like biology.
