Winter swimming pool covers can help you keep debris out of your pool, while making sure chemicals, like chlorine, stay in. How do you choose the right cover for your in-ground or above-ground pool?

First, it is helpful to know exactly what you’re looking for. A pool cover is a pool cover, right? Not quite. There are safety mesh covers that are designed to cover your pool during the summer. Lightweight yet strong, these covers keep children and pets from falling into the pool. Because of the mesh, however, they would not be ideal for winter use.

Some of your options for winter covers include those made from mesh or a solid material. Which is right for you? Let’s take a look at some features that you should watch out for so you can get an idea of what you need:

Test kit, easy enough to get one at pool or local hardware store. Ph balance either up or down depending on your water. Some sort of sanitizer like chlorine. There are a couple of different option but once you decide, you have to stick with that one. Beyond those basic some algaecide and shocker. You can always use bleach for shocker if you go with chlorine just remember to put it in after dark. It's actually very simple once you get the hang of it and you can find instructions all over the web. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on stabilizers and clarifies and all that other crap they now say you need. Balance your PH levels and check your water at the same time daily. You can't balance your chlorine unless the PH is balanced. Chlorine works better at night so if your using a timer for filter, have it running at night.

You can get a complete maintenance kit online or any local pool store. A floating chlorinator, test kit, hand skimmer and a pool vacuum should be enough. I got mine at this website: http://www.pooladviser.com/maintenance.html
