Can you develop lactose intolerance?

Is it possible to develop lactose intolerance over time, or is it a condition you can only be born with? Also, can it get better or worse with time? Just wondering, thanks!

Lactose intolerance usually develops over time. As we approach adulthood the amount of lactase our body manufactures begins to wain. When you consume more dairy than your lactase can digest, undigested milk sugar can enter the intestines. There the sugar exerts osmotic pressure and fluid begins to accumulate with the digested food. Diarrhea and cramping results. A stomach flu or food poisoning can temporarily make lactose intolerance even worse. Over the counter lactase pills can make dairy foods easier to tolerate.
