Heathen is wrong. A "smog pump" pushes FRESH air into the exhaust to lower hydrocarbon output at the tailpipe, period. It's purpose other than that is none. You do NOT need it and the truck WILL make better power not pulling the belt. But since you are in California, you will be forced to replace it, i'd imagine.
Source(s): They are pretty cheap, look at a salvage yard. It's just a couple of bolts and a belt. - BdBLv 59 years ago
unless you need it next week to pass smog, id cut the belt untill i can replace the smog pump.
it adds air to your exhaust to burn hydrocarbons that leave the cylinders. to pass smog it needs to be present and functional. the actual name us Air Injection Reaction pump. (AIR Pump)
if you decide to remove it entirely, i hope you are good at altering vacuum diagrams.
hahaha, the guy who answered above me doesnt have the slightest clue what hes talking about. he is referring to EGR. he doesnt know what AIR injection is. AIR pumps push fresh air into the exhaust manifold to react with hot exhaust gasses.
