Do you interpret Heian Pinan Kata as...?

What does it mean to be safe from harm? Is that not peace? Is that not tranquility?

What you state has merit, however literally translating foreign languages and then cross referencing them doesn't work.

Just as jujutsu, jiujitsu, and jujitsu now carry different connotations depending on who translated what and when, and what forces affected the translator's bias.

The kanji 平安 comes from hei or pin, meaning "tranquility " and an, meaning "peace "; however an can also be pronounced as "Yasui" meaning cheap or inexpensive.

Now while the latter is less likely the correct meaning, it shows the open definition a kanji can have.

Also why there is conjecture that few kata names and the accompanying kanji are accurately paired together based on one teacher's subjectivism.

So, what does Heian mean?

Itosu created the kata for the public school system. I have no doubt that it was specifically named with the purpose of giving Karate a less barbaric connotation. That or to follow in line with other kata names, such as Ananku, 安南空, meaning "peaceful southern sky ".

At least that is the kanji denoted for ananku by Shogo Kuniba, so I admit I am not confident in the name -meaning correlation.

The definitions provide and evoke a feeling that the kata should impart the practitioner, I'd argue that the meaning is less important than the feeling evoked during practice of the kata.

Various quotes from many Karate masters who stated that the Pinan Heian kata were developed for children. Such as those from students of Chotoku Kyan, Gichin Funakoshi, Nagamine Shoshin and simply the fact that they exist only to instill body movement. Ogoshi is easy for children NOWADAYS. It is erroneous to encourage or assume that it was so safe before padded floors and walls were developed to the economical efficacy that they are today. Even in Kano's first school, he purportedly only had six mats. Add in the laundry list of injuries noted with modern judo keiko at high school levels and I'm left with the assumption children were eased into Judo around the high school ages. While you probably disagree with me, the truth of the matter is that the Pinan Kata are little more than "common language" kata between styles. They lack two handed motions until you reach the Yondan Godan kata which denotes a sense of simplicity. While we can put pieces retroactively into place based on our knowledge AFTER we are taught to disregard some aspects of the enbu in kaisai no genri, this second hand information comes after we have learned more advanced kata which better symbolize this or that movement.

Edit the okinawan language and the chinese language are completely different even the kanji is different, there are some similarities but they are different

secondly the language and kanji change every so many generations, they change so drastically that they are unreadable with out knowing the year it was written. the pinan serious was created in 1905 with a specific meaning behind it, written in okinawan not in chinese. its not like the kata is hundreds of years old and came from china, it was created just over a hundred years ago, for a specific purpose, by itosu. he wasnt hiding the meaning. he knew it was to be taught in the public schools, to children who were being taught the okinawan language not the chinese language
