How does tipping work?
Hi, I'm travelling to Orlando for a holiday. I'm Australian. We don't tip here in Australia! So who exactly am I expected to tip and how much? Do I tip the taxi driver? Do I tip a waitress at a restaurant? How don't I tip? Sorry to have to ask, I just don't want to offend anybody by not doing what's expected. Many thanks.
Thanks everyone, I certainly don't want to be a "bad" tourist so I'd better make sure I have sufficient cash on me to tip correctly!

It's customary to tip your waitress at a set down restaurant. Tipping is usually 10-20% of the total bill. It's really at your discretion. If the waitress didn't do a good job (ie: didn't come back and check on you, refill your drinks, etc.) then go with the lesser amount. If they did a superb job then 20% is a good amount.
Cab drivers I would say a two or three dollars is fine depending on the length of travel. Don't be fooled by tip jars setting on just about every counter these days. If your ordering something like ice cream, or at counter services (like picking up a pizza, sandwich etc.) then don't feel obligated to put anything in the jar.
If you order room service at your hotel, it's customary to give the person bringing the food to your room a few bucks. Same with pizza delivery. Here they charge for the pizza, a delivery fee, AND you're expected to tip the delivery driver on top of it. If you order a pizza it's cheaper to just go pick it up yourself unless you feel like shelling out an extra $5.00 or so.
If you get a service done like getting your hair cut, colored, manicure, massage, etc. Then the 20% rule comes into play again. Of course if you get horrible service somewhere then don't feel like you have to leave anything. Tip simply means To Insure Prompt Service.
When in doubt just ask if it's customary to tip. At the end of some of your restaurant tickets it will state tip not included or please tip your server. Oh,and if you go to a bar, it's customary to tip your bartender or waitstaff. I usually tip $1.00 per drink.
Enjoy your holiday!

Yeah tip cab driver a little bit say fare is 17 let him keep the 20. It depends on the restaurants for the waitress if its fast food usually no tip is required. A rule of thumb for somewhat nicer restaurants is 10% if the service isn't that great. 15% if the service is average 20% if its great service. I only say this since at a lot if restaurants the tip is split between the waitress, busboy, dishwasher. You wouldn't want to short the. To much just because their waitress or waiter was crappy. Also tippings not required unless its stated somewhere so you don't have to if you really don't Want to

You can find the answer in jst about any guide book. For restaurant servers it is practically a must. They depend almost entirely on tips for their income. That is not the case for taxi drivers and many people do not tip them. Many restaurant are now including tips as part of the bill for parties of usually 5 or more, The very worst thing you can do in a reataurant is leave no tip and then claim that you did not know. This is a terrible insult to you and to your country. Unfortunately it happens quite often.

Sadly, EVERYONE expects to be tipped these days. It has turned out to be more like, "I deserve your tip" instead of "I want to earn your tip" like it should be. Like one of the other people above said, it's not REQUIRED anywhere so tip according to the service you are provided. If a waitress is really friendly and makes you feel welcome in the restaurant, give her a few bucks. If a waitress is rushing you and never comes back to check on you, don't leave anything. These people that work in the service industry need to EARN their tips.

Usually 20% of your bill is a great tip. The way I tip most cab drivers is if for example my bill comes out to 16.87, I simply give them a 20 (round up to the next multiple of 5, usually) and don't bother with counting out 20%. America is really a tipping culture and just about everyone expects to be tipped these days, a 13 dollar pizza cost me 20 dollars today...crazy.

The least I ever tip is $4-5 eating out, even if its a cheap $15 meal. If I ordered $20-$30 meal I tip about $5-7 and anything around $50, I tip $10 or more. And if its over $50 I give a tip to accordingly. I never tip the taxi drivers where I live cause no one does....nothing but bad things to say about taxi drivers in a small city.....

Tips? We'll why no longer smile at her and say hello.. begin with the fundamentals. Don't act like a jerk and be Macho, women hate that. Just be your self, If she does not like then you definately transfer on. Plenty of fish within the sea. Hope this is helping, Cheers,

it's absolutely ridiculous what them americans get tipped. I'm from ireland and if you get a tip here, then well and good. Happy days.. however it's expected over there. They say the wages are crap etc, but that's bull! We asked a fella in a restaurant is pay really that bad. He was gettin paid 12 dollars an hour. So in pounds that would be say about 8 quid? That's more than what a waiter/waitress would get paid over here. 20% gratuity on top of that. Another 5 dollars at least.. so 17 dollars per hour or so for working in a restaurant! Such a load of b0llox! Everyone there expects to be tipped mate by the way. Don't worry about offending american people with lack of tips, they get enough lol..i sound very miserable i know, but it really is ridiculous!

You can tip how much you want to tip. You can tip whatever restaurants you go to, taxi and waitress. Its all up to you if you want to tip or not.
