Two searches got me the answer

google 'Missing persons unit' it takes you to the Metropolitan Police Website

on it there is a 'Careers' tab and it gives you all the information you want

so yes, you need to apply to your local Police force and take it from there

I'm not in the U.K., but this can be accomplished anywhere. I would phone or go down to the local Police station and inquire with the Watch Commander/Desk Sergeant/whomever is standing there, if there is anyone available from Missing Persons department.

Whomever they give you, just explain that while you realise they are extremely busy, and you don't want to pester anyone..would they mind speaking with you re: what they, personally did to become glamorous, missing Persons Investigators/detectives (kidding with the glam part), vs working in some less desirable department. This would be a good time to work on your charm and charisma..and make sure to compliment whomever it is.

There are very few people who will turn down sincere and genuine inquiries from someone who is interested in pursuing the same career path, and even if they are too busy to drop everything and speak with you..you should make sure to offer an alternative time to speak. Don't get too wordy and ramble-on..but just ask to be steered in the right direction, as far as what would one do in preparation for a career in the Missing Persons, within the police department.

The best way (in my experience) to obtain accurate and helpful information such as what you are seeking, is to speak directly to someone who has that particular job. Find out what he/she did/didn't do to secure that position and what would they recommend for you. As long as you carry yourself with maturity and appear to be serious and genuine = present well, you and your query will be well received. It would be a good idea to avoid saying anything such as "..I don't want to work in this or that dept".. or anything else that would indicate you are inflexible and are not serious about a career in Law Enforcement.

    Good Luck.

(it would sure be a lot easier if someone would answer you, here on Y!A.com, though, huh?)
