There are two major strains of the herpes-simplex virus. HSV-1, which commonly causes 'cold sores' on the lips, and HSV-2, which is a sexually-transmitted infection causing genital herpes. However, HSV-1 can also infect the genitals and cause genital herpes (making it an STD as well, in this case).
When your friend told you she "has herpes," she probably meant she had HSV-1 orally, in other words, she occassionally gets cold sores. HSV-1 is extremely common in the population (more than half the population has antibodies) and not considered an STD if it was acquired through kissing/drinking after somebody with a cold sore.
