There is definately a contrast between the two. Mrs. Birling does not react at all sorrowfully with her death and doesn't regret her part in eva's death (quotes). She has no sympathy and learns nothing.

Gerald, i think slightly learns but is especially traumatised by the death of eva. He does show more emotion than mrs. birling and is seen as more sympathetic.

I think those two are of a higher class, but Gerald is more sympathetic. He does show more care than Mrs. B, despite towards the end he still is interested in materialism.
