The Arab world is the very home of belly dancing.
So I gather it was very much allowed at one time.
Take for instance the Arabian Nights stories.
But it would appear as if some fundamentalist influence has crept in.

In Islam you're not supposed to be showing your hair let alone a belly. They expect you to cover up EVERYTHING except your hands and face.
Seriously if you have to ask if something is Haram then it probably.
