What is rundll32.exe?
ok so I'm on my computer right I see its late and I need to shut everything off and go to sleep. I'm going through making sure everything is closed (Internet, iTunes, etc). I finally get everything closed I go to the start menu click shut down twice and then all of a sudden a pop up said rundll32.exe is not responding and it was I asking should I force it to shutdown or should I cancel the shutdown until it starts working. I start thinking to myself oh crap I just got a virus on my computer. so naturally I pull up my virus protection program which it is currently searching my whole system for a virus(es). now I'm pretty good with computers I can figure them out pretty quickly but this is puzzling me. what is this program rundll32.exe? well I go online with my iPod and look it up. well this website tells me that it's nothing to worry about its just a thing windows uses. but then I notice that other people have searched rundll32.exe virus. great you mean I might have a virus on this computer possibly disguised as a harmless program on windows? I tried looking up what this virus was and then going in first hand and seeing if I had it. but I can't find anything usefull. so if you know what the virus is and no it's like code or whatever please let me know because I want to know for sure that if I click END NOW when it asks I can click on it knowing I'm not killing this computer. oh and another thing of why I assume I might have the virus is because this computer moves so slow a snail can cross an entire football field and it will be half way done with opening one of my programs :P

rundll32.exe is part of Windows, and is used to run program code in DLL files as if they were within the actual program. However, many viruses also use this name or similar ones. This file is also commonly used by spyware to launch its own malicious code.
Virus with same name:
W32.Miroot.Worm - Symantec Corporation
Backdoor.Lastdoor - Symantec Corporation
Trojan.StartPage - Symantec Corporation
There are different files with the same name:
"BatInfEx" can run at start up. Displays battery status information on an IBM Thinkpad
"LoadPowerProfile" definitely not required. Added by the MIROOT WORM! Note - do not confuse with the valid LoadPowerProfile entry which has "powrprof.dll" appended to the command/data line
"Rundll32" definitely not required. Added by the DVLDR TROJAN! Note - this is not the valid "Rundll32.exe" as it's in the Windows\Fonts directory
"rundll32" definitely not required. Added by the SANKER WORM! Note that the valid "rundll32.exe" resides in C:\Windows\System32 wheras this version resides in C:\Windows
"TaskMan" definitely not required. Added by the DVLDR TROJAN! Note - this is not the valid "rundll32.exe" as it's in the Windows\Fonts directory
"UPDATEHOOK": ??
"Win32 Rundll Loader" definitely not required. Added by the SDBOT.A TROJAN! Note: Rundll32.exe is a valid Windows application called "Run a DLL as an App" and stored in the C:\Windows directory. The version created by this virus is saved in the C:\Windows\System directory
"Windows DLL Loader" definitely not required.

rundll32.exe is a crucial Windows process, but like other Windows processes, some malware will copy the name in order to infiltrate your system.
Try this:
Firstly, boot your computer to the Safe Mode menu screen. You do this by repeatedly pressing F8 as soon as you boot up. Once there, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking. Continue to boot from there, by pressing Enter.
Now download the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Install it, get updates and run a full scan (still in Safe Mode). This is a direct download link. Copy and paste it into your browser’s address bar, and press Enter.

After that, boot normally and run another full scan with MBAM. It will detect any malware that wasn’t running in Safe Mode.
If the problem still exists, download and run the free Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool:

You should now delete the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, as updated versions are often made available. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can be easily uninstalled, should you wish to do so, but it may prove to be beneficial in the future.
Hope this helps.

I don't know EXACTLY what the process is but it's a windows process that NEEDS to run for windows to work correctly. If im right it's a process that manages other windows processes. If you want to know what it does exactly just simply google Rundll32.exe.

The rundll32.exe process is responsible for running DLLs and placing its libraries in the memory.
Edit: What ever you do, don't delete this file.

It an internal Windows program that runs 32-bit DLLs. It's pretty vital. You better reboot.
Also, PLEASE don't write paragraphs that long. I didn't read any of it past the first three lines (I couldn't), and I doubt anyone else did either.
