How do you get volume at the crown/roots of your hair?

Soon, I am cutting my hair like Scarlett in this picture. My natural texture is pretty close to this picture, but my roots are never as voluminous as the bottom!!! How can I get voluminous roots like in this picture without blowdrying my hair straight and without backcombing it? (Which I've heard is very damaging to hair)

Thank you, I'd appreciate any input!! :)

I heard Bedhead (& other companies, but that's the one that comes to mind) came out with a mini crimping iron that works great for this purpose. You press your hair with the crimper just at the base of the hair and it adds great volume. It's much gentler on the hair than backcombing.

When you blowdry your hair do with ur hair upside down like I sit in a chair and hang my head down with my hair flipped and coming down. Start at the roots Then work your way to the tips and when you are done and flip your hair back to normal it will be volumized :)
