Wireless router question?
In my house, there's desktop computer in the living room. It is connected to the internet through a small box from verizon, without a wireless option. I am home from university for the summer and would like wifi in my bedroom for my laptop. However, my mom does not want to change her internet plan. So, can I just buy a wireless router from best buy and plug it into the internet box? If so, will that give both my computer and the desktop computer internet access at the same time?
How much would a router be? and where would it plug into on the verizon box? the only things on it are data, internet and 12vdc.

You are spot on. That is exactly how it will work for you. I would recommend a good wireless router that supports wireless n signal from linksys.
EDIT: The router should be about $50. Here is a list from the bestbuy site.

The router is connected to the same port where your desktop is connected to on your modem. The router comes with 4 ports. You can connect your desktop to one of the 4 ports and of course your laptop connects wirelessly. Essentially the router allows you to split that one port on the modem into 4 ports plus wireless :)
You might want to look at sites like http://bensbargains.net/ to see you can get a good deal on a router.
Hope this helped!

I wouldn't do that myself, it sounds very much like you have a modem there which is fundamentally only capable of serving a single connected device. To share the connection you have two basic options. Firstly you can get a DSL router that replaces the existing box from Verizon. That will need configuring with the username and login credentials among other things so you'll need to get those together first - Verizon's helpline should be able to help.
The other alternative would be a router with an ethernet WAN connection - these are often sold as cable routers but you need to double check that it is one that plugs into an external modem rather than the cable line directly. You plug that WAN port into the existing box and the existing computer into the router. Your laptop would then be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

Yes it will work, a good router will cost around $30 - $40. Just unplug the internet line from your verizon box and give it to the router as input and there are some outputs(1,2,3,4..) from the router. Plug in a wire(available in the stores) from the output and give it as a input to internet in the verizon box. Switch on the supply to the router & verizon box. Here you go wireless. :)
