Do new cars sold in California still come with extra emission-control equipment?

I live in Washington. I'm looking at buying a 2010 Nissan Cube that was first sold in California when it was new. I know that, years ago, new cars sold in California had to have extra emission-control equipment that new cars sold in other states didn't have. Are they still doing that? I like the idea of a cleaner-running car--but I still remember people complaining that the California smog equipment did a number on performance, plus it was prone to breaking down, and expensive to fix. Is that still the case? (or for that matter, was it ever really that much of an issue?)

No. All cars are now emissions compliant. They don't make cars just for CA anymore. Besides Washington has the same emissions laws as CA so if you buy a California car then it should have no smog issue in WA.

Yes, California still requires smog and emission control with the following exceptions:

-Vehicles made in 1975 or prior

-Diesel-powered vehicles manufactured prior to 1998 (or a GVWR of more than 14,000 pounds)

    -Electric vehicles

-Natural gas powered vehicles weighing more than 14,000 pounds

    -Hybrids, motorcycles and trailers

-Also, if your vehicle is six or less model years old, you are not required to obtain smog certification as long as you pay the annual $24 smog abatement fee.

If your vehicle DOES NOT fall under one of the above categories AND you live in certain California counties listed by the DMV, you must take the vehicle for a smog inspection every other renewal period!
