Has anyone had luck getting rid of ants with borax?
We have what appear to be carpenter ants and they make an appearance every spring. Keeping things clean usually keeps them out of sight, but the second anything is placed on the counter they scurry in towards it from everywhere and I'm pretty sure they're living in the wall or something. We've tried traps in the past with moderate success so I'm looking to try something else. I've seen a lot of sites mention borax powder and I happen to have some handy (I make my own laundry detergent). Has anyone had success using it? What "recipe" did you use? And how long did it take the ants to be gone for good (if they ever did)?

to properly treat carpenter ants you have to get to them in the nest, otherwise all you are doing is killing a number of foragers, probably less than 5% of the colony...borax is too heavy a powder to be able to treat where needed, if you can locate the entry point of the nest go with a light dust such as Drione, DE, ECO etc. I saw on the web somewhere a carpenter ant product that had a straw attached to the can, this would be more effective treating the nest inside of tubing , hollow core doors, window sills. For the most part carpenter ants do not accept commercial baits. A few years ago a couple of professional baits have come out that do work well. You can get these over the web or at a do it yourself type pest store. Advance Carpenter Ant granules for outside, MaxForce Carpenter Ant gel for inside.

Terro ant bait has borax and sugar in it and it is mixed so the ants can eat it and have time to get to their nest and die.
3 cups sugar
1 cup borax. A little bit of water can be added to this to make balls.
To kill a nest of ants mix half and half sugar and borax.

No. But you might mix a very small amount of powdered sugar with baking soda..THAT non toxic receipt has been around for years...it's relativly cheap and it works.
