Why do RWers oppose welfare?
What is the philosophical basis behind arriving at such an opinion?

Most conservatives do not oppose welfare as a concept, only as practically implemented. While the philosophers of the party will go on about how private charity and community groups did the job now done by welfare, and did it well, there is no major objection to a welfare program that truly aided people who truly needed it.
The problem is that it has been expanded to the point where it is being defrauded. People who don't need it use it as a permanent source of income. This was more true prior to the 1996 welfare reform act. Indeed, many conservatives still complain about welfare out of habit, but nobody is proposing legislation to alter welfare because it is a lesser problem now. Instead the unfunded liabilities of SSI and Medicaid/Medicare require attention.

Everybody should oppose welfare (except, perhaps, those on welfare that prefer to remain on it)
The goal should be JOBS for those on welfare, don't you think??
Isn't it better if people support themselves than others supporting them????

I think they only oppose it for freeloaders.
Where have we gone to when self sufficiency is seen as a bad thing?
Keep a safety net for those who despite their BEST personal effort, cannot make it for a time or ever, but everyone else, get a job, like the rest of us, and help out those who truly need it.

The current TANF system is the Republican plan.
During the Great Recession, when unemployment doubled, the national TANF caseload rose by just 13 per cent (compared to 45 per cent for SNAP/food stamps), while states scaled back their TANF programmes "to save money - shortening and otherwise tightening time limits and reducing already low benefits further, leaving the poorest families poorer".

If "we" provide for you, how are you ever going to learn to provide for yourself?
I don't think anyone is suggesting absolutely zero welfare programs. The point is that the existing programs don't work to life someone up. They simply reward them without requiring any real amount of effort to show that they are working to better themselves.. to better position themselves to get out of their hole.
A well designed system that really does help people and only is available to those who truly need it would be great.

They don't. You are misrepresenting things. They oppose abuse of welfare. Big difference. How about if we strive to get people back to work?
