Anyone have a good Fantasy book agent I can talk to?

I have written a fantasy novel and I need a good agent. I live in the Houston, Texas area, but with e-mail that should not be a real problem. What I understand is most agents won't really look at you unless you know someone. I am looking for that someone to help me crack open the door. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You're going to have to do it the way most writers do it: submit to agents with a good query letter and hope your query letter entices the agent to read your manuscript. It's a myth that you need to know someone. Most people fail by writing a bad query letter. your query letter is your foot in the door, so research and get feedback on it before you send it off.

I use aaroline.org and there's also agentquery.com and other places with agents. You'll have to visit each website and build your own list. ALWAYS check the agents website for the most up-to-date information and guidelines.

BTW, no one in their right mind would give you a cold recommendation to an agent they personally know - they'd need to read your manuscript first to see if it's what their agent (or agent friend) is looking for and if they think it's good enough and no one wants to get a bad reputation for recommending bad books to their agent because after too many mishaps the agent will stop taking their recommendations seriously.

Anyway, good luck with your book.
