You might want to give the cage a good cleaning before she gives birth, so you won't need to disturb her too much. The other female can stay with her and the babies unless either rat is unusually nervous. Keep an eye on them for awhile to be on the safe side.

But extra nesting material in the cage so mama rat can make a nest if she feels like it (most but not all do). Hopefully you've been giving her boiled egg or some other source of extra protein, if not just start doing it now. If there isn't an igloo or other box in the cage, add one. You might want to give them a couple sleeping places in case mama rat wants privacy with her pups.

I've heard that some hairless does are unable to nurse their pups. Do some research on how to hand feed them if necessary, and if you know a breeder, call & ask questions.

Good luck with your little guys.

Source(s): 1 of our rats was pregnant when we adopted her & I asked tons of questions. We left the other female with her & she acted like an auntie, even carrying the pups back to the nest when they began to wander off. These were furred rats however & I'm not familiar with the challenges of a hairless mother rat, although we did have a sweet hairless girl for almost 3 years.

Definatly think about taking out the other rat. The mother could be testy around people and other rats for awhile. just leave the mother to her work, she will know what to do, make sure you have them clean bedding and something to sleep in like an igloo
