possibly bought a stolen motorcycle?

So heres the deal, i purchased a dirt bike from a kid couple hours away a few months ago. In his craigslist add he stated that it was a 2001 kx100 for $400 and it needed a new top end and parts were in boxes. I figured hey I'm fairly mechanically inclined and it would be a good bike for the girlfriend so i went down to check it out and sure enough, all the parts were in boxes. So i bought it from him for $300 went home and a few months later fixed her all up and realized this is totally not a 2001. So i ran the VIN on a website and it happens to be a 2007 kx 100. I only got a bill of sale with it and his name doesn't exist, I wrote down his cell phone number on the bill of sale and tried calling him recently but it has been disconnected. Anyways, I feel guilty knowing this could have potentially been some kids bike but i really don't want to lose out on all I've put into it. How can i figure out if it truly was stolen without contacting the police? I know that sounds bad...

You're lucky in that you don't have to register and tag this bike in order to ride it. However it sucks that you may be contributing to the problem of motorcycle theft.

The DMV doesn't typically keep a record of VINs that aren't registered for street use, so you won't have much luck there. And unless the bike was insured, the NCIB probably won't have record of it either--I assume most casual dirt riders don't insure their bikes.

It may be hard to find a record of the theft unless you know the area it was stolen from and check with policedepartments in that area... but as you said you're trying to avoid the cops.

So... you're only option is probably gonna be running the VIN on stolen motorcycle websites to see if you get a hit. Not very reliable, but you might get lucky.

Feel free to post the VIN here if you want. Someone might come up with something.

Just don't do anything, enjoy the bike and keep your mouth shut.
