What to do about loose neighbourhood dogs?
I walk with my 16 month old son in our neighbourhood daily (In Southern California). I like dogs, but I hate owners who let their dog off leash. I fear for my safety (I'm 5'5 and 110 pounds), and for the safety of my son - especially since many friendly dogs are much less friendly with children.
I know it's illegal to have dogs off leash in a neighbourhood, but how can I stop it? & how can I protect myself and my son? Who do you report loose dogs to (especially since I usually don't stick around long enough to write down an address, or I have no clue where the dog came from).
I don't want to hurt these dogs, but I don't want to be defenseless either. Any advice?
I forgot to mention... I don't mean walking a controlled dog off leash (not that I think this is appropriate either). But I'm talking about letting their dogs literally roam the neighbourhood alone and /or on the front lawn or in backyard but with gate open. These dogs are not friendly nor well trained, and rarely with any supervision. If an owner is there, they don't take any initiative to contain their dog.

If the dogs are not actually doing anything why are you worried .
I have 6 kids 3 dogs and off lead dogs don't bother me if there under control.
If you want you can report it to animal control ,

Talk to your neighbor's about it. It is not illegal in all of California to have your dog unleashed. Only vicious dogs are required to be leashed according to the California Leash Law. If I were you I would just let them know my fears. If they aren't aggressive dogs then I wouldn't worry about it. You can't act like you run the whole block. If you call the animal services they will take the dogs, and possibly put them to sleep. Like I said muster up the courage and talk to the animal owners FIRST. Start being more nosey and see where the dogs came from if you don't already know.

You could drive to a safer area to walk.
Attach a note to the dog collar asking the owner to please keep his/her dog(s) at home, on his/hers property.
I prefer that someone would come to me about my dogs & not just report them.
carry pepper or wasp spray, it sprays about 20 foot. watch the wind, you don't want it to come back on you or your dog.
If you have leash laws, you need to call Animal Control & they will site the owner for having his dogs at large. The next time they are picked up, the fee goes up, & up some more if picked up again.

Have you spoken to the neighbors about it?
If so and they continued, call animal control. Let animal control know who owns these dogs and they will notify them that they have their dogs in custody.
