Lemon or Orange Peelings in the disposal.....turn on for about 2 seconds to start the grinding process without washing them away and the aroma smells great and neutralizes the odors

William is correct on the ice and baking soda. If the smell slightly persists afterward, pour some bleach and let it set for a few hours and rinse it down. I would like to dispel this myth that many folks believe. Ice does not sharpen the blades. It just helps clear the debris from them. As I explain it, in the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" scenario of life, ice does not beat metal.

Any disposal not used enough will smell.
It's best not to leave food in it and it's best to spin it often whether it's loaded for use or not.
The ice cube and baking soda answers is fine, but just start using it, and the smell will go away quick. . .

Any citrus peel and warm water leaves it smelling greater effective. help save it sparkling. For a competent cleansing i exploit a cup of baking soda, a million/2 cup of salt, use in basic terms slightly of water to bathe those into the disposal, and then I pour in some white vinegar....it incredibly is going to foam up....after it loses a number of its fizzle i turn on the disposal and the nice and comfortable water and wash it by....this additionally helps sparkling the drain previous the disposal unit incredibly....

Also, remove the rubber gasket at the top and replace it. Over time gunk forms under the rubber and smells terrible. If necessary if it doesn't just pull out, cut it out and buy a replacement, the new one will fit over the opening and be removable so you can clean it.

is it a double sink? sometimes grease and ground up food will build up in the drain pipe that flows from the opposite sink drain. if it's plastic pipe you should be able to just pull the piece down and clean it out. it gets nasty in there.
that is only if you have a double sink though
