Would a hedgehog make a good pet?

I think they're adorable and I'd like to get one as a pet.

I have a cat at home, but my cat doesn't go in my room.

I don't really know too much about hedgehogs, or what they'd be like as pets.

Are they dangerous at all, with the spikes?

What do they eat?

What kind of cage do they need?

How much are they usually?

Is there a specific one I should get?

That depends more on you than it does the hedgehog, to be honest. They don't make good pets for most people. They thrive on routine, and want things to happen at the same time every day, their cage to be arranged the same way every day, etc. They must be kept above 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. They are most active at night. They must have a wheel with a solid running surface, and they will poop on it, and you will have to clean it up. They aren't tame like cats or dogs, and really don't care about pleasing you, although they take quite easily to being spoiled rotten. Compounding all this is the fact that every hedgehog is a unique little personality, so if you've met one and liked it, the one you get might be completely different (shy vs adventurous, messy vs clean, etc.).

Vet care for them is more expensive as they are exotic, and finding a vet that not only will see one but who is actually any good with them is a lot more difficult than with other more common pets.

Even worse, a lot of the care information about them out there is ridiculously outdated and some of it is downright dangerous. People on Yahoo keep posting that they live 6-9 years. No, they don't. I've had over a dozen in the last 15 years and cancer claimed them before they were five as a rule.

They make good pets for calm, quiet people who are willing to: spend at least an hour holding their hedgehog each day, at the same time each day; not squeamish about being pooped and peed on, as this will happen with younger hedgehogs and hedgehogs whose signals about needing to go are ignored; clean poop-covered wheels every night; provide a cage that is 72 degrees Farhrenheit all the time, free from drafts, and is at least 6 square feet in size; accept their hedgehog and its personality and not expect it to be just like any other hedgehog; weigh your hedgehog every day using a cheap kitchen scale with a 1 gram resolution to track its health; examine the hedgehog twice a day (morning and night) for any injuries or mysterious bumps that could be an early sign of cancer (early cancers may be treatable depending on the type); learn how to clip a hedgehog's nails when they don't want you to without hurting the hedgehog; and most of all, to love the hedgehog for what the hedgehog is, a very smart, curious creature that shouldn't be left in a cage all the time but who may or may not want to be petted, just held quietly.

I think they usually carry fleas.

You can get round the spikes with some good gardening gloves.

They eat bugs but I think you can give them dog food.

I don't think you can get cages for them but you can sometimes get them to stay in a garden and they eat all the slugs and other bugs.

I don't think you can buy them but I'm sure you could build a humane trap!

Source(s): Personal experince with hedgehogs. I'd rather not talk about it (too painful)

Are you crazy? They are wild animals! Plus they are full of fleas and it would be cruel to keep them locked up. Also, a specific hedgehog?

NO! Hedgehogs are WILD animals and they belong in the WILD - NOWHERE ELSE!
