VC5; Registered Keeper, Main Driver, Policy Holder (Insurance) & Owner?

What is the difference between all these positions and how are they linked (in England)?

I want to buy a car and only I will drive it, mostly at weekends (sometimes weekdays), but I will park it in my mums rented garage. However the car has to be "in her name" (what ever that means) enabling her to rent the garage. But she does not drive.

Would my mother's status as "Registered Keeper" (if that is possible without a license) be sufficient for me to park my car at her garage overnight?

For Tax and MOT whom will they contact? With whom will the INSURANCE communicate with? Who's name will be entitled to No Claims Bonus? And who is actually the "Owner" in this instance?

(My head is spinning lol) Thanks

This is simple and does not change no matter how much you ask.

Try to get insurance for a car that you are not the registered keeper for and most insurers if not all will not want to know.

If Mum does not have a driving licence she would not get insurance - end of

The registered keeper is the point of contact for all things like MOT, Tax, and possible fines.

Insurance will communicate with the policyholder only in the first instance but in the event of a claim would want to see the V5C in many cases to verify that they were told the correct info.

V5C - a document which details the registered keepers address and name (often refered to incorrectly as "The Log Book")

Registered keeper - the person the DVLA have on their register of keepers. many people and organisations take the registered keeper to be the financial owner if the car is a private one even though the V5C says very clearly on it that it does not confirm who the owner is. This person is responsible for making sure that the car is legal and will be fined if it is not.

Main Driver - the person who drives the car the most and typically uses it to commute to work. Other drivers can be added, Named Drivers, and they would not be expected to use the car on a regular basis.

Insurance policy holder - a car insurance policy has to be in one name and this is the policyholder. They are the one that is responsible for paying for the insurance and in most cases the insurer will insist that they are also the main driver and financial owner of the car.

Car insurance can be further complicated, made more expensive, if the car is normally parked somewhere other than your home address at night.

I can see what you are trying to do about using the garage but what you can never do is tell lies to an insurer - unless you want to risk fraud and non - payout of claims.

Forget trying to arrange this on line and go see a broker on the high street like Swinton (others are available) and explain to see if they can help - they might be able to.

The recent law change requires that the registered keeper insures the car, so your scheme won't work
