What are the best dog foods (kibble)?
I have a Shetland Sheepdog that we have been feeding Hills' Science Diet to since he was a puppy. He has a pedigree and is naturally over-sized. He is also 5 years and six months old. He has grown tired of Science Diet and we can't afford canned or straight meat for him. What do you suggest?

This has a list of dog foods (dry and wet) and shows the ratings they have (1-5 stars).

Everyone you ask will have a different opinion as there is no 'best' dog food.
In my opinion, the best kibble has a high meat content, is produced in factories owned by the brand, does not co-pack, discloses where they source ingredients, have had few or no recalls, and relies more on whole foods than synthetic vitamins. That being said, here are my top choices:
Orijen
Acana
Lotus
Now! Grain free
Go! Natural
Natures Logic
I also like the following, even though they don't meet all of my criteria:
Fromm
Precise
Canine Caviar
Nutrisource
Earthborn
Holistic Select
I've been in the pet food business 8 years, and all of these brands have few problems and give great results. Since you have been on Science Diet, I think you would have the best success with Fromm. Fromm was developed by the apprentice to the man who developed Science Diet. Their Gold line is affordable and most dog's transition to it well.

Its not good to mix raw and kibble what so ever because kibble takes much Ionger to digest.Thats like you eating caviar and stake all in one sitting. I feed my dogs raw meat and its the best diet out their. All those dog brands are made in the same factory with the same quality and contrary to belief they are not very different its all the same.I watched this documentary called"a dogs breakfast" and its the best thing a dog owner could watch, the woman used to work in the factory where they make dog food and she went through all the ingredients and she showed people how they make the food,it was THE MOST DISGUSTING THING IVE EVER SEEN!If anybody watches that they would not feed their dog kibble ever again! Even if their are healthy ingredients they are cooked at such high temperatures the nutrients are cooked out. They are bulls*** people all they want is to make a profit.

It depends on the Individual dog. My dog eats Natural Balance, it's the best food for her.
Solid Gold, Wellness, taste of wild and blue buffalo are a few other brands that come to mind.
There are a lot of good brands, but not all dogs like or respond well to the higher quality food-most places have sample bags, see if you can get some of a food you'd like to try for your dog, if the dog likes it, get a bigger bag.

Hi, the top ten dog foods brand are listed below
Artemis Dog Food
California Natural Dog Food
Dick Van Patten Natural Balance Dog Food
Eagle Pack Dog Food
Evangers Dog Food
EVO Dog Food
Innova Dog Food
Merrick Dog Food
Solid Gold Dog Food
Wellness Dog Food
Mine loves Evangers and Wellness. Sometimes I would change for new if it seems tired of them. Also I often buy some treats, like some biscuits, kind of soft & chewy. He loves it very much. If you are interested, you can have a try to see if your dog loves the biscuits.

Science Diet really isn't one of my favorite brands. It is full of artificial chemicals and dyes. I would recommend Blue Buffalo. It is one of the healthiest dog foods on the market and reasonably priced.
