lying is part of a persons psychological self defence, when a person lies in this manner it is because they are probably feeling anxiety all the time, they also probably don't trust the people around them.

do them a favour and don't call them on it, don't call him/her a liar because it can really mess them up in the long run, try listening to the lies and working out where the truth is, lies always have a element of truth to them. so try listening.

I used to do this as well, as a child. I have no idea why. Sometimes, it would be easier to twist the truth a bit, turning it into a small, harmless lie, just for the sake of not having to explain unnecessary details. Sometimes, I just don't know. I didn't see why it would be such a big deal, I suppose. My lies were completely harmless, just pointless. It became second-nature to me. Doing it out of habit. I got rid of it as I got older.
