Why do people call me "goth"?

Almost every day at school, people call me goth. I don't care what people think of me, but now they get the impression I'm "weird" and I can't make any friends.

I listen to industrial music like Rammstein, Marilyn Manson and Deadstar Assembly, but I also listen to Type O Negative, The Cure, Switchblade Symphony, Bauhaus, and Jack Off Jill. But I also like some Three Days Grace and some Linkin Park and J-rock. I have an open taste to music, besides country, rap and things that are too mainstream like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Justin Beiber but my favorite genres are industrial metal and darkwave/synthpop.

I like to wear baggy cargo pants, boots, black shirts, but I also wear COLOR. Once in a while I'll wear skirts with boots and socks, armwarmers, corsets, and once in a while I'll just wear skinny jeans, boots and a t-shirt.

I'm an outgoing, funny person, and I'm also empathetic and sensitve. I can easily tell what other people are feeling. I am not depressed by any means, I rather love my life. I love to dance, and I sometimes have a short-temper but I'm generally really nice to everyone.

I have always stayed away from stereotypes. I'm not very open about my personal life, but I do like to voice my opinions which tends to be very different than most people I know. I enjoy old, classic horror movies/stories, being out at night time, graveyards, gothic art, and most things that people find "dark", "spooky" or "different". I love victorian clothing, architecture and furniture too.

I don't appreciate what society feeds us, the lies and the **** like that. I easily accept life as simply living and dying instead of being afraid of death. I'm not obsessed with death either.

Please don't lecture me about "it's just a phase". I've always been this way. Please don't call me "emo". It's a music genre after all.

Please don't tell me about how goth is not a label; I understand this. I know it's a lifestyle not a fashion statement.

I think I must have a twin. You sound exactly like me, lol. You and I share the same music taste for the most part (Rammstein, Type O Negative, Manson, etc). For the entire duration of your time in schooling you will probably get stereotyped - that's just how school is. People have their cliques and groups of friends to hang out with and their own opinions. I was like you - I wore a lot of black (band tees, tripp pants, gothic boots, etc) but I was and still am also very versatile. I love wearing dresses and bright colors on a good day. I was still always stereotyped as a "goth" though and very outcast. I am 23 years old now and have been graduated from High School since 2007 and I can honestly say that all of that "stereotyping" is gone now. I still have the same music interests (saw Rammstein May 4th in Chicago, in fact!) and am still the same person, I just don't have to deal with the High School drama of judgemental people anymore!

Well actually what you state here says a great deal.

Why do people call you that?

You have listed your favourite music and such musicians as Bauhaus and Switchblade Symphony are part of the Gothic subcultural music scene.

You have stated that you like to wear 'black shirts' and 'corsets'. That too is Gothic in terms of dress sense. Corsets & the colour black are a staple in the style of the Goth.

Your 'alternative' beliefs in our culture are very similiar to what a lot of people who are part of the elaborate subculture believe in as well.

Also, your interests and hobbies are like that of a Gothic person's.

If these people know that you partake in such things then perhaps this is why they call you this.

Wayne, I went to High School in the 1970s and I had a wonderful Agnostic teacher who refused to go to any religious related assemblies and asked to be allowed to offer a study hall for those who chose not to attend them. He was very bright and I learned a great deal from him at that time. I felt like he had an interesting point of view and allowed me to question him and questioned me in the process so that I would begin thinking openly about my beliefs. I attended five different Colleges around our state and had a number of great instructors who did the same type of questioning. I found it rather enlightening even though I later decided to become a Christian. Being open-minded and thinking does not mean that you adopt someones views. It means that you are open enough to listen and think about what others say without judging them for those thoughts. I am thankful to have been exposed to this at that time. I also believe that a person can call me narrow-minded without being so them-self. I am rather narrow-minded at times. Have a great evening and a wonderful week. Thanks, Eds .

It seems like your classmates are just stereotyping you for what they THINK goths are. The stereotyping happens to me too, and it pisses me off like hell. Goths don't wear black all the time. They can wear color, you just won't see the. wearing bright, peppy. colors. People are calling you goth probably because of the clothes you wear and the music you listen to. Don't let their comments change you, though. Just stay the way you are!

Because of how you dress? I dunno, but people love to stereotype others.
