Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need. It really is foolproof except it's a bit picky in what file formats it takes.

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie... but you may have problems installing them on Windows 7

    Other free video editors are...

    Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects

    VideoLAN Movie Creator - http://videolan.org/vlmc/

    TrakAxPC - http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/

    VideoSpin - videospin.com/

    VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/

    Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one

    Serif MoviePlus - http://serif.com/free-video-editing-software/

    Ezvid - ezvid.com/

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

As for audio editors then Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - is the best known free one but there are loads of others as well - http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/25-free-digital-audio...

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

    Free (good for basic editing):

Windows Movie Maker (it might already be installed on your computer)

Lightworks http://lightworksbeta.com/ (very powerful, but rather complicated)

VirtualDub http://virtualdub.org/ (must have for avi trimming)

Avidemux http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ (simple cutting, filtering and encoding)

    Wax: http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ (effects)

Inexpensive and easy to use (best value for the money):

AVS: http://avs-video-suite.org/ (includes Video/Audio/Photo editors, converters and much more, 18 tools suite)

Movavi: http://movavi.org/ (Video Editor/Converter, Screen Recording, Slideshow Creator and a whole lot more)

Make your choice! and good luck!

If you are using windows then you should have microsoft movie maker already installed if not google it and you can download it for free. Its s imple program but will be alright for what you need it for.

Sony vegas pro is a paid for program and a load more features. I would suggest trying microsoft movie maker see how you get on then if you need more features look into getting a copy of vegas pro.

    Hope that helps

VirtualDub - free, easy and functional video-editor program, also there are lots of plug-ins for it.

Audacity - is a free audio editor, it also allows to mix multiple tracks
