Do the horses wanna win?

Do the racehorses care if they win or lose? They seem to like to run fast, but do they actually care if they come in first or fourth?

If the jockeys just sat on them and did nothing, would they even keep running around the track at all? Maybe they would form a herd and just stand around and graze or do whatever horses do in their free time.

Never actually seen real live horses, have you? YES,they'll run anyway....that's they're genetically wired & trained to do.

Most horses keep running even if their jockey falls off, occasionally finishing first. It doesn't count as a win, of course, if there is no jockey! Some horses are very competitive and these are the ones that will give 110%, especially if another horse is next to them the last 1/4 mile of the race. I have read many stories about horses pouting in the back of their stalls the day after they lost a race, it is kind of sad.

Every horse has a different personality. They are trained to win, plus they have a competitive nature wanting to show superiority over another, which helps a lot in training . Front runners are more likely to want to win, but that doesn't mean they always do. Some horses like to run in the pack, reason some race horses seem to finish second or third. Also, they are trained to remain calm and save their energy for the race. I don't know how far to go with this, whether they feel bad if they came in 4th rather than 1st..I'm sure the experience horses know when they are in the winning circle. :)

It depends on the horse. They're like people. Some are very competitive and others aren't. The ones that don't care about winning are not very successful racehorses and they move on to their second careers very quickly. Some horses are very fast and capable of winning, but they just don't care. Some horses are slower, but they have the will to win. The best horses have both the capability and the will.

There was a horse in New York about 10 years ago... his name was Gander. His jockey fell off at the start of the race and Gander ran in front during the entire race. He crossed the finish line first then took himself to the winners circle to have his picture taken because he knew he won.

Ruffian was an awesome horse who would never let another horse in front of her. A horse got loose during one of her workouts and she tugged on her rider and raced that loose horse and she wouldn't stop until she was in front of it.

So yes, some horses want to win.
