As Karl Marx said, history is a movement of the masses. Although he meant this in a general sense he also meant specifically the numerous secret societies in Europe that were trying to overthrow monarchies. No secret society has ever overthrown a government. Coups there have been aplenty, but they're not secret societies, they're conspiracies. Big difference.

Ben Franklin was a Freemason. He was a radical at the time but his political ideas now are commonplace. Aside from the goal of making human beings more enlightened, Freemasons are also quite involved with charity work.

Some leaders of the Revolution were Freemasons, but the organization was not in charge of the Revolution.
