Need some help asking a girl out.?

Question

Here's my scenario. There is a Cute girl around 17-18. She works at our local Winn Dixie Every time i see her she smiles at me. The other night i was across the store and she smiled and waved. Ever since then i can't stop thinking of her and I've never felt this way of a girl let alone anyone. I'm 19 6' 4" and attractive. However I've never dated a girl. Never even had a first kiss. I've away been one to push. away. I've thought long and hard and i have 2 options i really like. I was thinking of giving her a compliment and slipping her a note saying-
 Hey,
 My name is Matt.I hope that this isn't a little to much . I've noticed you for a little while now and you seem very sweet. I'd love to get to know you better. Of course as long as it's fine with you. my number is -----.

-Hope to hear from you soon

or talk to her a little bit then slipping her a my phone number

Please help me choose and pick an option and explain why or if you have a suggestion.

I think  both are not great. I think slipping her any note at all, (those two in particular), is a bit of a cop out. You are making her make the choice, making her call you and ask you out in essence and you are not being direct. That's not right!

I know you don't want to be rejected, no one does, but you have to be the man here. Next time you see her, say "Hi, my name is Matt and you are?"   Then you can directly ask her if she would like to go out with you to _______________ (insert movie, dinner, lunch, horseback riding -- where ever you want to take her). She will say "sure" or she will say "I am dating someone" or what ever. At least you will A. get the practice you obviously need to approach women and B. Have a chance. 

Please don't slip the note thing, that really feels way off & sort of chicken.    Best of all the best luck to you --- go slugger! :)
