Why do senior citizens watch the news so much?

Or is this just my old folks, because it seems like they don't watch anything else much.

Update:

I appreciate all answers so far, all straight and honest. Actually some are very good.

Me I must say, I agree that some shows are too predictable to watch. So I do watch the news as well, just not three times a day.

I don't , I use the t.v. for background noise . But it is there in case something catches my ear. I'm seldom in the same room as the t.v. The young peoples t.v. shows are never on . Ive seen all the coming of age crap and so called love drama crap and they can't come up with a story line that I haven't already seen or read. Same with the local paper and national magazines. They have the same stories just different names.

And how many years do you think we can watch some nitwit getting on the floor and stretching to the new ( not new!)and improved exercise. There are just so many years we can see this until we get REALLY bored.

Maybe the 'news' is at least going to come up with some currant info that may or may not pertain to our life.

Now, what do you watch that is just so interesting and something you have never heard or seen before? Are you still all jazzed over two people swapping tongues maybe?

I go through spurts of watching the news, especially the local news. When I get my fill I lay off for awhile. Right now we have five wildfires around Arizona and the cloud from the smoke is getting to some folks. Me for instance. My eyes have been burning and my throat is sore. The Gladiator fire which is the smallest of the five is in Crown King and has threatened to make that little town a ghost town. My husband told me that it was started by someone leaving a George Foreman grill on which sparked the fire in the house and then ignited a propane tank outside the house. What a mess. This is big news around here and I like keeping up with it.

Lynn, I too am saddened by utilizing the consistent undesirable information interior the media. in certain situations i favor to stay in mattress pull the covers over my head and punctiliously block out the international. there are particular communities who've inspired their people to disengage from participation interior the vote casting procedure because they say that "the fix is in". they say that there is fairly no way that the people can actual have an impact for solid in our society. besides the actual undeniable reality that the temptation is there on a daily basis to bury ourselves in different events and enable the international flow to H E Double toothpicks, I for one basically can no longer do it. possibly i visit't have the fashion of impact i ought to like, notwithstanding it really is certain that i visit haven't any impact in any respect if i do not stay conscious, turning out to be in touch and a minimum of attempting my outstanding to make sure that our elected officials do what's nice. Do I envy those who can turn their head? definite, I choose i ought to. After each and every defeat I actually have somewhat pity celebration for further or less a week, then i'm getting back up and commence back. Do i imagine it really is irresponsible to disengage?, definite. Our forefathers fought and died for our freedom. lots of our own fathers, brothers and sons have executed likewise. The very least we may be able to do is to stay recommended and vote. interior the 60's at the same time as prayer became being faraway from the colleges, I choose my mothers and fathers and the mothers and fathers of my associates ought to have stood up and fought. The previous people basically shook their heads and suggested "This international in going to H E L L in a hand basket." the more youthful ones were operating, busy with their jobs and toddlers, progression a existence. it fairly is a lot because it really is right this moment. there's a conserving.....i'm no longer particular the position it comes from....."It would not take a lot for evil to take over....All it takes is for solid people to do no longer something". Apathy. Apathy is the enemy!

Iused to be too busy to watch anything - raising my kids and working full-time, I was usually "otherwise engaged" when the news was on. Now, I have the time and the inclination to know what is happening in the world, so I do watch the news. But I do watch a lot of other things, too.

We watch because we want to be informed about what goes on in the world--not just muddling our brains with stupid "reality shows" and mindless comedies that really aren't that funny. Somebody needs to be aware of the state of the country, which a lot of younger people seem to be totally uninformed about. (Our President made the remark that there are 57 states. Maybe he was studying American History when he was doing all of that drinking and drugging he's admitted to).

I only listen to the news for the weather to see whether I am going to mow grass the next day or shovel snow since it changes every day in Indiana. But, my Dad liked to watch the whole news program to stay current on national/local news.He was a construction supervisor and traveled a tri-state area and felt it was good to be knowledgeable on current events.

I have no idea. I am a senior citizen and I only watch the news for the weather report. I can live without listening to all the bad news about death, crime, wars, etc.

You make a very valid point. I used to groan at my grandparents watching the news all of the time, but now find myself doing the exact same thing. Perhaps we are looking for a ray of hope?

We realize there is more to life, having seen more of it, than smart phones, ipods(whatever they are) and skateboards. We like to know what's going on in the world, not just within five feet of ourselves. We know that today's news has to be gathered from at least four or more sources in order to put together some semblance of truth. Young people are gullible enough to believe whatever they hear regardless of who's mouth it comes from.

Like Nietzsche, we are searching for an "honest" man.

I do watch a lot of TV that isn't news just for entertainment!
