So how come only men can crossdess?

I saw this article. So some kid wore a skirt and got suspended.

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Exclusive-...

On reflection it seems a female can pretty much wear any darnn article of clothing ever produced.

Men can't

What is up with that?

Update:

@Megara:

That is a funny observation. My brother had to dress as Scotsman for Halloween once. He ended up going to a womens clothing store with his with to buy a plaid skirt. Kilts are not popular i the US.

That is odd. I wonder if they would suspend a Scottish boy for wearing a kilt.

Girls do have a broader spectrum of clothing.

If I was a guy, I would be a transvestite for sure!

Uh. I kinda don't understand.... "So how come only men can crossdress?" then you say "Men can't".... I'm just a little confused on what you're asking... :P

Anyway at least I understand your question. Sort of.

Jeans, Shorts, ect are typically worn by anyone. I personally think it's how girls cut their hair that affects how people interpret the clothing.

I've never seen a guy wearing a skirt. This school sounds like some sort of private school, so I'm not surprised by their restrictions. I'm a high school student and I probably would find it distracting. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just rare and people don't see this sort of thing very often, especially in grade school.

So how come only men can cross-dress? Largely because women with their more open minds have already adopted EVERYTHING on the men's side of the wardrobe and get away with it. The word should be banned as "sexist" since it only applies to men!

There IS a double standard which hasn't gone away YET! Leading clothing designers ARE trying to put men into skirts as they say there is no reason not to do so. Obviously a man in a skirt makes for more sense than pants or shorts due to anatomy alone BUT due to the puritanical thinking left over from the Prudish Victorian Era not much has changed. Pants did make sense for riding horses and during the industrial revolution but not so much now. Pants are more acceptable for women (due to anatomy again) and now many women do not even own a skirt! (If a guy wants to look like a women he better wear pants)!!

What is interesting is if a guy tries on a short skirt on a hot day he isn't likely to give it up'. It is that comfortable... no additional crotch seams and tubes of cloth dragging over the legs is an unforgettable sensation and he will wonder why society is so screwed up. Also be aware a guy in a skirt not trying to look like a women IS NOT a cross dresser...he is simply a guy in a skirt. Make no mistake about it. A Kilt IS a Skirt by definition so call it what it is ... a skirt. Kilts are just a particular type of skirt (and there are thousands unlike men's clothes) that is usually tartan, hot, heavy and costly. WWW.UTILIKILTS.COM sells around 5 to 6 million dollars worth of "kilts" each year in the States. These and regular skirts are usually worn by guys who are "sexually secure" unlike the homophobic rednecks and other who tend to put them down. These are guys who consider practicality over fashion and think for themselves. Something women should consider when seeking a mate unless they are looking for a controlling relationship from some bad boy who nearly always is homophobic.

Men have worn skirts far longer than women throughout time and many of those skirts were short but consider this; Men's gym shorts are about 12 inches long and that happens to be the standard (average) length of a mini skirt sold in family department stores. A micro mini skirt at about 10 inches long happens to be the same length as some men's running shorts so bottom line is "mini"doesn't mean too short for anyone. You will find shorter is better as it provides unrestricted leg movement. Yeah gus like girls need to wear undies because they will have the same issues women have with an inadvertent flash now and then but if covered so what!

Still not convinced men can wear skirts check these guys and realize they still look like men just as women in pants still look like women so whats the big deal. A great alternative to shorts on a hot day:

A guy wearing a "Cargo Mini Skirt" with guy clothes is NOT cross dressing and in fact looks far better than in shorts. See some (not all) cargo skirts here and note they have many pockets, belt loops and tend to be plain looking. There is no need for specially made skirts for men as a skirt will fit any body style (male or female). The leading clothing designers say the only clothing that is sex specific is a bra and jockstrap. All the rest is up for grabs. Cargo skirts here..some not all are perfect:

Gays do not wear skirts so that is not an issue, only in movies and on TV for an effect. Ever see a real gay in a skirt? Didn't think so. Homophobic guys are afraid a skirt will somehow make them gay or less a man yet it is a real man who is not afraid of a skirt and he is the "secure" one who will welcome the option into his wardrobe as women did just 50 years ago with pants. Its just taking men longer than women so who has the more open mind?

There was a boy in the UK recently who wore a skirt in protest at boys not being allowed to wear shorts in the summer.

When I was at school (born female) I was not allowed to wear shorts in the summer and had to wear a checked "summer dress". In the end I wore shorts anyway- were they really going to make me change when they let me wear trousers the rest of the year?

Because trousers are already female-accepted apparel, cross-dressing is less obvious. Which doesn't help the girls who want it to be obvious they're cross dressing as much as it doesn't help the boys who'd rather wear skirts.

Its because society is very closed minded.

In early Roman times it was considered barbaric for men to wear trousers... until they decided to invade scotland. Roman outfits are fine in a Mediterranean climate, but not so good in the highlands.

In the 16-1700s men wore long, ringleted wigs, masses of lace, and embroidery.

And until WW2 pink was the colour for little boys, not girls.

Personally, I think that people should wear whatever they feel comfortable to wear.
