Looking for a good, in inexpensive AR-15.?

This will be my first AR, so I don't quite know a whole lot about them. Bear with me here =).

I'm shopping around for an AR that can fire .223 and 5.56, M4 style (adjustable stock and shorter length), preferably with forward rails. I don't need quad rails as I don't plan on mounting flashlights or anything, I just need a rail to mount a forward grip on.

If anyone could point me to some good manufacturers that make entry level AR's in the $600 price range, it would be much appreciated.

I looked at the S&W M+P 15 Sport models, but I don't like how the charging handle extends over the stock. Is this how they all work, because I have never seen one that did this.

Also, one that accepts a slidefire stock would be great since I'd love to give that a try when money allows >:).

I'm in NY btw. I know some companies won't ship to NY because of our retarded gun laws.

Update:

Edit: Completely forgot about the whole '1 from column A and 1 from column B makes it illegal' bullshit. Didn't realize an adjustable stock was a criterion for an assault weapon =(. Maybe I'll have to get a barebones upper and put one of those SVD style stocks on it that simulates a pistol grip while not technically counting as one.

You aren't going to find a good AR for $600. At that price range, you are limited to polymer AR's and crappy (DPMS, M&P Sport) metal ones. If you really want to spend as little as you can on a decent AR, I would go with an RRA with Magpul furniture. The Magpul MOE handguard can accept small portions of rail on the sides and bottom, so you can add whatever accessories you want without the weight of a complete rail system. If you don't want to deal with a charging handle (I'm not sure why you don't like it????) then your only option is to do a side-c0cking upper, which will cost you a hefty sum of money.

All AR-15 clones have the charging handle extend over the stock. You cannot have an adjustable stock with a pistol grip in NY.

I really don't think you can find a decent $600 entry level AR anywhere (try $800 or 1000 if you want a rail), but because NY has some whacky laws, this is probably about the best you can do: http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct1059.a...

ive seen some new DPMS ones at the last gun shot i went to for a little under $600. im pretty sure they were 5.56 and .223 and the were the m4 style. i never prices many out lately but i seen that one there and thought it was a decent price, i picked it up and it felt pretty well put together.
