My optician dilemma regarding eye sight test results?

I have finished with my original opticians I have since i was first diagnosed with short-sightedness when I was 9 years old, I have left this optician because they are more about selling bells and whistles that you either don't need or want for business purposes and it doesn't help that they possess poor quality testings in eye exams in comparison to other opticians.

Since then (im 27 years old) and it had been 3 years since my last eye examination, that was with my last optician, afterwards I gave the prescription to an online glasses maker which I have worn these glasses since.

Last week I had booked 2 different opticians for my eye examinations on the same day! 2 hours apart from each other, where I then got fresh air and outdoors between each appointment.

Optician A, Vision express; was recommended by a close friend who has been there for years and I got the following results:

Right eye: Sph -4.25 Cyl -0.50 Axis 105

Left eye: Sph -5.25 Cyl -0.25 Axis 90

Optician B, Boots, recommended by many of my mum's friends:

Right eye: Sph -4.00 Cyl -0.75 Axis 105

Left eye: Sph -5.25 Cyl -0.25 Axis 55

As my left eye has clearly got worse in both exams and my astigmatism has to, the conclusion is that I need new "stronger" glasses to get through the day.

I am worried about my astigmatism results (Cyl and Axis data) as they are conflicting each other especially the Axis!

I need new glasses made soon but I dont know what to do? do I use Optician A or Optician B results to base my glasses prescription on?

Does this really matter or am I being pedantic?

Should I have a third optician eye test? or will this confuse me more?

Is my Astigmatism mild, moderate or bad?

Anything else you would like to add would be super, as I am no expert in optometry!

Additional Details of my last prescriptions before the above data:

Date of prescription: September 2008:

Sphere (SPH) Cylinder (CYL) Axis Near addition (ADD)

Right eye -4.00 -0.50 99

Left eye -5.00 -0.50 110

Extra information 24/12

Date of prescription: February 2010:

Sphere (SPH) Cylinder (CYL) Axis Near addition (ADD)

Right eye -4.00 -0.50 100.0

Left eye -4.75 -0.50 45.0

I hope this additional info helps.

There is no major difference with the right eye, it is the left that is questionable different in axis only.

Your Rx from optician A is very similar to your 2008 Rx in power and axis.

Your Rx form optician B is very similar to your 2010 Rx in power and axis.

You tolerated both Rx's in 2008 and in 2010 with the difference in the axis. Because your astigmatism correction and axis are closer to what you have been wearing for the past 2 years with optician B, it may be easier for you to adapt to the new Rx if you go with optician B. For that reason, I would go with optician B.

Because of what you wore and tolerated in the past, I would say that either would be acceptable. As for your astigmatism correction, it is a mild Rx. Your right eye has more astigmatism correction than your left, but both eyes are mild.

**To best understand how to read your prescription, think of the sphere and cylinder as money.

    2.00 is like two dollars

    1.00 is like one dollar

    0.75 is like 75 cents

    0.50 is like 50 cents

    0.25 is like 25 cents

Each 25 cents, is like one step worse on the vision scale. So, if you have 0.25 it is the mildest correction that you can get. A 0.50 is like the second step correction you can get....and so on.

Your Rx is pretty substantial in the sphere and very small in the cylinder. The cylinder correction is your astigmatism correction. With the cylinder (astigmatism) correction, you are VERY mild.

Just a foot note. Your eyes are very important and waiting 3 years between exams is to long. You should be checked yearly or at max every 2 years. You need to find one Dr that you like and trust and stick to that one Dr until you don't like or trust him any more. To go to 2 different Docs is a waste of money and time. If you get an Rx and have difficulty with it, go back and have that Doc fix the issue. Seeing 2 different Docs is creating a problem for you, when most likely, either could treat you and set your Rx to what you need. After all, they are only writing down, what you tell them you see the best with. You can also take your Rx and go somewhere else to purchase your glasses. You don't have to purchase from the same place as your exam.

I am not of fan of 'mail order' glasses. They cannot correct an issue, as they are not fitting you. Your Rx is substantial enough that they need to be made right. If your glasses are not properly adjusted, it could throw off the way you see through them. I would recommend going to someone who can take care of all aspects of what you may need.......that includes adjustments. You can't get that from mail order.

Here are the facts: In a study of glasses bought from major online prescription eyewear vendors, 28.6% were incorrect and 22.7% were unsafe. Combined they had a whopping 44.8% failure rate.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm not an optician but from what I can see you have a mild astigmatism. There isn't a lot of difference in the results other than that axis for the astigmatism. Hopefully an optician will answer and say if it is big. Certainly not all opticians get as good perscriptions for astigmatism and you have to just try till you get a good optician. Recommendation is one way. The other thing is that if you buy the glasss from the opticians and they dont' work fo ryou then its the opticians responsibility to fix it. But if you buy online you are on your own.

All you can really do is decide which optician you have faith in - which do you feel took moer trouble over the exam, and go iwth that.

Unfortunately for you, I cannot answer all your points as we haven't examined you ourselves.

'I need new glasses made soon but I dont know what to do? do I use Optician A or Optician B results to base my glasses prescription on?' This I cannot answer for you.

'Does this really matter or am I being pedantic?' Lol, some people can really notice very subtle differences and others are very tolerant.

'Should I have a third optician eye test? or will this confuse me more?' Your choice entirely but I see you haven't tried and Independent practice.

'Is my Astigmatism mild, moderate or bad?' Your astigmatism is very mild in both eyes, particularly the left.

You could always try being competely up-front and honest with whichever opticians you preferred and tell them you have the two prescriptions, you would like them to make you some glasses but would they please double-check both options in the trial frame so you pick whichever one feels best for you. They wont want the cost of a remake so any chance to futher verify the Rx surely cannot be a bad thing.

You have to remember that the prescription is based primarily on your responses as to which of the views the optician presents is clearer, so your responses may have been different at each of the two tests. Best option would be to get the glasses made by one of the opticians (rather than going online) so that if your vision is crisp through the glasses, they'll be willing to check your prescription/glasses.
