Chain Link Fence Question...?
I was told that you should not re-use the posts for a chain link fence, but that you should buy new ones. This person stated that the old ones are weakened or something and that new ones will last longer.
They look fine to me and I don't see any reason to buy new ones. The person that told me won't be making any money off of it, so there's no reason for him to lie to me, but he says his uncle (who is a contractor) as well as his online research has all told him to buy new.
Any thoughts?
He just told me that by chipping the old concrete off the posts, it weakens the integrity of the steel and that you should always just get new posts.
It apparently torques and can warp the steel when you hit the concrete that hard.

The time and labor to remove the concrete may be equal to or more than buying new posts. Also, chipping off the concrete may compromise the integrity of the zinc galvanized coating allowing rust to take hold easier and quicker.
I really think it's a matter of personal choice.
But if you are going to move in a few years, reuse the old posts and let the new owner worry about the problem.

Never heard such crap in my entire life!
If your happy with what you have done then leave things as they are. Other people are entitled to their opinions,
How can old posts be weakened beats me. They must have been weak before they were first installed.- but you don't mention whether the original posts are what type of wood or even whether they are steel, in which case I'd be inclined to use new steel as these ones could rot off at ground level & this is probably your informant was trying to express to you & you got the wrong idea, that all of the post would be weakened.
Chain link fencing is normally wrapped around the corner post before being stapled to it.
I have seen it where it's clamped between two pieces of wood & that works fine too!
Cheers!

That's B.S. If your old posts look fine, they are fine. If there is concrete that needs to be hammered off the old posts to clean them up, he just doesn't want to do that. Putting in new posts would just be easier than reusing the old ones. Galvanized pipe posts will last for decades!

=== you can use the used posts but down the line you will wind up with fence on rusted out posts .. sometimes trying to save a few bucks can be very costly ... new fence .... new posts .... your pal is correct .....
