Circuits in Parallel and Series Pt 3/4?

A battery is set up in series with three capacitors. The battery has a voltage of 9V and each capacitor has a capacitance of 3microfarad's. What is the total capacitance?

    When n equal capacitances of capacitance C are combined in series, the total capacitance of the series combination is C/n. In your case this gives 3/3 = 1uF.

    For the general case when unequal capacitors (of capacitance C1, C2, C3... etc) are combined in series, you calculate the total capacitance as Ctot = 1/(1/C1 + 1/C2 + 1/C3... etc). In your case this gives Ctot = 1/(1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3) = 1/1 = 1uF
